7 Surfing Etiquette: How To Share The Waves Responsibly
Surfing is not only about riding waves but also about sharing them responsibly with others. Practicing good surfing etiquette ensures a safe and enjoyable[...]
Our mission is to provide access to anyone but especially children and young men and women who do not have, on their own, the ability or opportunity to safely get to the beach and into the ocean so that they can participate in all of the healthy, healing, and transformative activities that it can provide.
The mission is not only to get them to the beach and out into the waves, but to train them in the tradition of the legendary Hawaiian beach boys, teaching them how to swim, surf, body board, stand up paddle, and paddle canoe, along with other beach and ocean activities.
OSP's Foundation will provide the equipment and mentoring, as well as summer jobs, internships, and endowment funds for their higher educational aspirations. At the same time that the participants are earning all of these benefits for themselves, they will also be provided with the opportunity to start giving back by teaching what they have been and are being taught.
As part of the Project, each group of participants will be teaching the next group what they have learned and, over the months and years of training, will be continually adding to and maximizing their ocean knowledge and their teaching abilities. This, perhaps, is the most important part of the Project because we firmly believe that it is actually more empowering and fulfilling to pass on what you have learned than it is to learn it yourself. This aspect of the program is of vital importance for the participants sense of purpose, confidence, and self worth.
We believe it is essential to have this experience be one of not just being helped, but one of helping others as well. Participants will not leave the program feeling they were given a handout or pitied in any way. Instead, they will emerge as confident teachers and guides that enjoyed giving and guiding as much as they enjoyed the ocean, its surf, and their mastery of its various challenges.
Welcome to the Ohana Surf Project Foundation - where every wave of generosity makes an impact! See our programs below.
Our surf instruction programs are designed to welcome individuals of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds into the world of surfing. Whether it’s a first-time experience or a step toward mastering the waves, we focus on making the ocean accessible to everyone. By providing expert coaching in a safe and encouraging environment, we help participants overcome physical, mental, or resource-based barriers to enjoy the thrill and freedom of surfing.
Mentoring is at the core of what we do. Through one-on-one guidance and group programs, we empower youth to gain confidence both in and out of the water. Our initiatives focus on building resilience, fostering a growth mindset, and encouraging participants to see surfing as more than just a sport—it’s a tool for personal transformation, empowerment, and connection to the natural world.
Our instructor apprenticeship program provides an opportunity for youth to not only become confident surfers but also to give back to their community. Participants gain valuable hands-on experience teaching others while earning an income and contributing to their development education fund. This program equips them with professional skills, leadership training, and a pathway to future opportunities in surf instruction and beyond.
At the Ohana Surf Project Foundation, we’re committed to breaking down barriers and making the ocean accessible to everyone. Through surf instruction, personalized mentoring, and our instructor apprenticeship program, we create opportunities for individuals to experience the joy, freedom, and empowerment that surfing brings. By teaching skills, building confidence, and fostering a culture of giving back, we aim to uplift our community and inspire a new generation of surfers and mentors.
Together, we’re not just riding waves—we’re creating lasting connections, life-changing experiences, and a more inclusive, supportive surfing community.
